Dr. Marie-Theres Sommerfeld is a Fellow at the European Leadership Network (ELNET) in Berlin and a Researcher at the German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies (GIDS), where she specializes in security policy and strategic analysis of the Middle East. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and master’s degrees in Peace and Conflict Studies as well as International Law and Diplomacy. Prior to joining GIDS, she served as an officer in the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr), with assignments at the Center for Operational Communication and the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College.
Her international experience in Africa, Israel, the United States, and the Middle East has shaped her expertise in security and defense policy. Her research focuses on Islamist terrorism, military strategy, international law, and foreign policy dynamics.
